District selected for curriculum pilot

Carrollton, Ky. - Jan. 26, 2022 - The Carroll County School District has been chosen to participate in a pilot program to help school districts in Kentucky develop and align curriculum. The Kentucky Department of Education said in a release that "The pilot program will assist Kentucky’s schools and districts as they develop a standards-aligned local curriculum that includes high-quality instructional resources and is aligned to the process established in the Model Curriculum Framework." The program will run through June 2023.

"We are excited and thankful to be part of this pilot program," said Superintendent Danny Osborne. "So much has changed in education in recent years, and now is a great time for school districts to go back to the fundamentals to rethink how instruction is delivered. Being part of this pilot program will both help us improve the curriculum we use as well as provide KDE with feedback on how the process can be improved for other school districts."

According to KDE's Standards/Content Areas website, "The Kentucky Academic Standards contain the minimum required standards that all Kentucky students should have the opportunity to learn before graduating from Kentucky high schools. The standards address what is to be learned, but do not address how learning experiences are to be designed or what resources should be used."

Curriculum, on the other hand, is what is taught to help students demonstrate their mastery of the standards. In this pilot program, school districts will be developing and/or selecting new curriculum.

“By having aligned work at the state, district and school level, there is a greater potential for sustained impact and increased student success,” said Commissioner of Education and Chief Learner Jason Glass, Ed.D., in a release. “This pilot will serve as a model for multi-level, multi-year engagements that produce best practices for instructional leadership across the state.”

"This is a great opportunity for us to work together to meet the unique needs of our students," Osborne said. "Having an aligned curriculum in a school and in a school district amplifies good instruction across grade levels."

The Carroll County School District is a public school system that operates within the geographic boundaries of Carroll County, Kentucky. The district serves around 1,900 students K-12. For more information on the Carroll County School District, visit http://carroll.kyschools.us
