Cook Like A Rockstar is a popular Focus Friday class at Carroll County High School. The instructor was awarded $1,750 in grant money through the local McDonald’s restaurant. Tracey Reynolds, the youth services coordinator at CCHS, applied for the grant to benefit the class taught by Bessie Howard. She sought $750, which she was awarded. As a bonus, Grant Groen, owner of the Carrollton McDonald’s, donated another $1,000 to the cause. The students have learned to make entrees and desserts in class. In the spring semester, they will take a trip to Sullivan University to learn about their culinary arts program.

CCHS students learned how to turn blue jeans into paper during a Focus Friday class with Spanish teacher Magali McCarty. She explained the process to the students, who worked in teams to complete the conversion. Students cut up blue jeans the prior week to prepare for this project. They utilized picture frames with steel mesh stapled to the frame to hold the blue jean pulp. After the jeans are run through a blender, it creates pulp. The pulp was scooped out of a bucket onto the mesh frame where water was sponged out of it and then the paper was moved to a towel for drying. McCarty hopes to continue the class for another three weeks and offer students the opportunity to make bookmarks for the library. Students will decorate them as well.
