Carroll County Middle School

On Friday, February 27th, we held another 🎉 House Assembly 🎉 where we recognized over 200 student accomplishments. Students were celebrated for their progress in i-Ready Reading and Math, and members of the Academic Team, Future Problem Solving Team, and Lighthouse Student Response Team were also recognized.
We also honored our Students of the Month for December, January, and February: Alexis Alcantra Sanchez, Quentin Hartman, Adam Wentworth, Rylee Hunt, Raelyn Dews, Sophia Simmons, Abbi Laib, Jaxson Stitzel, Benson Hill, Owen Hodson, Ava Boyer, Drake Pogue, Derek Allen, Maci Robbins, Kaylee Satchwell, Hailey Thompson, Jade Raxcaco Garcia, Landon Martin, Jeffrey Swain, Lily Mefford, Mason Roberts, Camden Barkley, Trinity Spears, Eugene Wagers, and Conner Bishop.

Hello Panther Families! 🐾

Cold and flu season is here, and we know it can sometimes be hard to decide whether your child should stay home or come to school. Our school nurses have shared the attached flyer as a helpful guide for families when making that decision.

Fifth graders from CCMS had a great time learning about food safety, preparation, and nutrition during Recipes for Life, a program provided by the Carroll County Cooperative Extension Service! 🍎👩‍🍳👨‍🍳

Students gained hands-on experience and picked up helpful tips they can use in the kitchen at home. 🍽️

Today, Dr. Christopher Schmidt from Western Kentucky University visited the 7th Grade Band to help students prepare for their upcoming performances. Dr. Schmidt offered feedback from the perspective of a judge at the KMEA State Assessment, focusing on the small details that can elevate both the sound and appearance of the ensemble. Although his background is in low brass instruments, he provided guidance to every section of the band.

We are grateful for the opportunity our students had to learn from his expertise as they continue preparing for their upcoming performance.

Our eighth graders are gaining valuable hands-on learning experiences through our new Career Labs! These labs give students the opportunity to explore a variety of fields they may be interested in pursuing in the future.
Students have had the chance to experience 🥽 welding, 🔨 carpentry, 👩‍⚕️ nursing, and 💈 cosmetology.
We’re excited to see our students discovering new interests and building real-world skills!

Over the weekend, several of our band students participated in solo and ensemble performances, and we are incredibly proud of their hard work and accomplishments.

Eleven students earned a Distinguished rating for their performance: Kelsey Hash, Hailey Pirtle, Keyla Hernandez Garcia, Kolbi Taylor, Sawyer Pattee, Priscilla Malo Beach, Willow Dolente, Ryan Morris, Landon Martin, Aydin Chatham, and Rowan Morris.

Additionally, three students received Proficient ratings: Hailey Pirtle, Kolbi Taylor, and Matthew Tingle.

Several Carroll County Middle School students recently attended a performance by the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra. The trip was a reward for strong grades, positive behavior and a shared interest in music and the arts. 👏🎼
Students enjoyed a lively program focused on Ragtime jazz music, learning about its history and unique sound along the way. 🎹🎷

Maddy Chesher, an eighth grader at CCMS, was recently diagnosed with bone cancer. This diagnosis brought life as she and her family knew it to a screeching halt. One of the big changes for Maddy is losing the ability to play basketball, a sport she loves. As an eighth grader she has seen consistent playing time on the CCHS freshman team. She recently played what could be her last basketball game. The Lady Panthers tapped her to start the game and score the first points of their contest against Shelby County on Feb. 17.
According to her family, after three months of chemo she will have surgery to remove the damaged bone and replace it with cadaver bone and a metal plate in her rotator cuff. “After surgery, she will then do another three months of chemo and 12 to 18 months of physical therapy to rebuild the strength in that arm and basically learn how to maneuver that arm because it will not function the same as her right arm,” said her mom, Kim Curtis. “The doctor said as long as everything goes according to plan and schedule we are looking at a five- to seven-year process from start to finish. Finished means being able to say she is cancer free.”

Members of the Carroll County Middle School Academic Team were recognized by the Carroll County Board of Education recently.
Fourteen students tested at the district competition and advanced to the regional level individually, the quick recall team placed first and future problem solvers team placed second in their categories, while the team won first place overall. Lilly Humphrey will advance to the state competition in the Arts and Humanities category.
“We’re building and we’re excited. They’ve worked very hard,” CCMS Academic Team Coach Sheila Underwood said. “You should be very proud of these kids. They represent Carroll County well.”
The Academic Team includes: Gabrial Beach, Ava Boyer, Kelsey Hash, Keyla Hernandez-Garcia, Owen Hodson, Attie Hoover, Ellie Hoover, Lillie Humphrey, Emma Marsh, Landon Martin, Alan McCarthy, Coralyn McCarthy, Hailey Pirtle, Elijah Riggs, Jaxon Routon, Jace Shisler and Gian Zacarias.

❄️ Snow Day Announcement ❄️
Carroll County Schools will be closed Monday, March 2 due to anticipated winter weather and ongoing staff and student illness. The forecast is calling for conditions that may cause slick and dangerous road conditions during the morning commute. This will be a traditional snow day and will be made up on Wednesday, April 1.

The Carroll County Public Library will host The Americans exhibit, a traveling exhibit from The Smithsonian. It will be on display from Feb. 28-April 11. The library is hosting a number of events during this time. Take advantage of this opportunity to learn about Native American history and culture.
